Day Eight | A Photo A Day | Get Well Mick

January 29, 2014 by Zoe-Lee Skelton

Unfortunately my beloved fur baby, Mick, has been kept in overnight at the vets.

He was lethargic yesterday, and had barely eaten, so I took him to the vets. He was running an abnormally high temperature, so they gave him an injection to bring it down.

Today he wasn’t any better. He hadn’t eaten for the last forty eight hours so I took him back to the vets and they said his temperature was even higher! They’re keeping him in tonight to give him some fluids and to try to find out what’s wrong.

So this one’s for Mick: get better soon!

Day Seven | Photo A Day | Dunstable Downs

January 27, 2014 by Zoe-Lee Skelton

I totally dropped the ball yesterday (I know, I’m sorry!), but  I’ve been celebrating my birthday so I kind of have a valid excuse.

I went to Dunstable Downs today to sock in what felt like subzero temperatures and dwindling, low winter sunlight. It’s really ancient and sits amongst notable burial grounds.

In-keeping with the rather macabre heritage, someone had left some flowers strapped to a park bench and I captured these below.

Anyway, here’s three photos to make up for my failings yesterday.

Day Five | Photo A Day | Brighton West Pier

January 25, 2014 by Zoe-Lee Skelton

When I woke early this morning, the weather dampened my spirits about my trip down to Brighton.

Ever the optimist, I hopped on the train, telephoto lens in tow, and hoped I would get a semi-decent shot of the West Pier; now a shell, haunting the Brighton horizon.

The lighting wasn’t that great, but here’s today’s effort:

f5.6
100/s

I converted the raw file to grey scale, before opening it in Photoshop to amend the levels and add an unsharpen mask.

Stay tuned for tomorrow!

Day Four | A Photo A Day | Caught In The Headlights

January 24, 2014 by Zoe-Lee Skelton

I cycled past this scene and then abruptly stopped.

The lingering twilight meant I had to open my aperture up to it’s fullest (f.4) and bring the shutter count down to 1.00 s

The wall was otherwise spotless, so it looked like someone had violently chucked paint at the wall just to spoil it. I wanted to add a gritty filter to accentuate the aggressive act.

I made use of the “high pass”  filter and changed the radius to 5.0

I then added a desaturate adjustment to the layer and flattened the image. It’s given the image a high contrast, gritty finish.
Tune in tomorrow for my next photo!

Day Three | A Photo A Day | Pink Elephant

January 23, 2014 by Zoe-Lee Skelton

I caught the worm this morning with this stunning picture of the sunrise.

f/5.6
1/60s

The colours are so vivid, the shot required limited edits in Photoshop. All be it a little tweak with the contrast and levels.

I’ve called it pink elephant because it reminds me of the “trippy” drunk scene in Dumbo. Possibly still one of the finest montages in the history of animated film.

Here it is for your pleasure:
