Interior Design Ideas for the Lounge

May 17, 2015 by Zoe-Lee Skelton

When I moved in with my boyfriend just over two years ago he told me he would soon be redecorating the lounge. Well, three years later, we’re still stuck with the same tired looking sofas and worn carpet. The room is cosy, but very dark, which can be somewhat depressing in the winter, especially because we get minimal light through the window anyway.  So I’ve decided to start gathering some inspiration in an attempt to get the project going before winter rolls around again.

I have so many creative ideas rattling around my brain as to what I could do with the space and I know I could spruce the place up at a low cost. I plan to scavenge bits and pieces from skips and recycle existing furniture.

The theme: rustic

I’m going for a rustic theme in a way that brings the outdoors in, with some splashes of colour.  I’d like to incorporate animal elements into the  design too, potentially using a woodland creature theme wallpaper.

I’ve split the project into three core areas; wallpaper, furniture and furnishings and I’ve created three separate mood boards showcasing my ideas.  Perhaps I’ll provide some inspiration for any decorating projects you’re doing at the moment.

Wallpaper ideas

Optimized-Wallpaper moodboard

I’d like to paper one of the lounge walls and keep the three other walls a neutral colour. I’m happy to spend the bulk of our budget on wallpaper because I want something that’s unique and not available from somewhere like Homebase or B&Q because I think the designs lack originality. It’s important to me that if you’re going to use wallpaper in a room it needs to be exciting to look at, like it describes some form of narrative so you never get bored of seeing it. That’s why I’ve decided to go for bright, bold animal themed prints.

If you’ve seen something you like, here’s where you can get it.

From left to right:

  1. Harvest Hair Wallpaper from £60 per roll from Fabrics&Papers
  2. Night owl wallpaper by Arthouse £18.98 per roll from Wallpaper Direct
  3. Exotic birds on branches wallpaper  – out of stock but the link to the listing is on my Pinterest board
  4. Flights of fancy in cream by House of Hackney, £148 per roll available from Wallpaper Direct
  5. Insect wallpaper in orange by Vivienne Westwood, £70.00 per roll from Occa-Home
  6. Owls and twigs wallpaper by Wallpaper Republic Laurie Forehand, £135 per roll, from beat.
  7. Woodland owls in green by Fine Decor, £8.99 per roll from Wallpaper Central
  8. Tropical birds by Cole & Son, £72 per roll from Designer Wallpapers

Furnishings

Optimized-Furnishings mod board final

Furnishings describes carpets, curtains, shelves and ornaments. I’d like to use rugs and cushions to add colour and animal motifs throughout the room. Some of the items featured are no longer available but I’ve tried to include links where possible.

From left to right:

  1. Terrarium – featured in The Telegraph’s article about enclosed gardens designed by Ken Marten
  2. Bulb cage pendents by BenclifDesigns – unfortunately this has been sold but there are similar items in Ben’s Etsy store.
  3. Lumber wood recycled into wooden flooring – from my pinterest board
  4. Feathers blank cards by MilesOfLight. These are £7.82 for 6.
  5. Lace inside embroidery hoops – easy make you can do yourself!
  6. Animal pillow cases from Garnet Hill – no longer available but there are plenty of other designs to chose from.
  7. Vintage rug source: http://blinkblink-blinkblink.blogspot.co.uk/2012/03/polster.html
  8. Inside look at someone’s log cabin, source: https://www.bloglovin.com/blogs/helt-enkelt-11489665/uterum-1022446427/

Furniture

Optimized-furniture

For the furniture, I’m keen to use natural materials like solid wood as well as reclaimed objects like crates for shelving. Here’s where I’ve taken my inspiration, from left to right:

  1. A living room outdoors source: http://www.buzzfeed.com/peggy/bohemian-homes-youd-love-to-chill-out-in?sub=2303673_1249547#.sipAjWKGD
  2. Reappropriated crates – you can get these from any grocers source: http://organizeyourstuffnow.com/wordpress/31-days-loving-live-day-14-versatile-pieces
  3. Aspen sofa source: http://imgbuddy.com/rustic-sofa.asp
  4. Woven textile blankets source: http://www.rotikapdamakan.blogspot.co.uk/
  5. Logs – I like the surface pattern of these
  6. Checked armchair by David Seyfried
  7. Wooden cube shelves – make these yourself with reclaimed wood
  8. Leftover wood coffee table by Lara Donatoni Matana
  9. Tree branches for coat hangers source: http://designspiration.net/image/88300159086/

There’s still a lot more for me to do. And a you can see, many of my ideas embody free materials that need to be upcycled so the project will be quite involved. Luckily my other half is a gifted carpenter so I’m sure he’ll be able to turn something out quite quickly.

Old Warden Railway Tunnel and Nature Reserve

April 20, 2015 by Zoe-Lee Skelton

Over Easter my boyfriend and I finally found Old Warden Tunnel.

My boyfriend likes to think of himself as a “Bedfordshire know-it-all” but even he had never managed to find the abandoned railway tunnel. I don’t know why he hadn’t been able to; I simply used Google Maps and it took us right there! But I guess for some rambling folk that’s cheating. Oh well, I won’t tell if you won’t.

The now abandoned railway tunnel

So the disused railway tunnel and surrounding area is now a nature reserve somewhat off the beaten track, full of hawthorn and blackthorn bushes, large ash and oak trees. When we eventually got there and trudged down about 2 million steps it was hard to believe that hulking great steam trains used to pass through this place.

Optimized-Landscape full view

The railway track used to connect Bedford and Hitchin and from there to London between 1853 and 1857. The line stopped taking passengers when it was officially withdrawn from use on the 1 January 1962 along with goods services between Hitchin and Shefford. And by the state of the detritus in front of the boarded up entrance, it’s been used as a dumping ground ever since. There was a cart with a bent axle and rusted wheel in front of the tunnel; almost serving as a reminder of the tunnel’s past.

Optimized-Rusty wheel tunel

(Oh yeah, and I was pretty impressed to see that the place had been tagged by All Type No Face – somewhere underneath the naff graffiti anyway!)

Standing outside was slightly eerie because there wasn’t the whooshing or echoing sound that I’m used to hearing when I’ve been through tunnels, both working or abandoned. The stillness was probably because this tunnel doesn’t have blast relief ducts, due to its lack of curves and relatively short length, allowing for good air passage. The air outside almost felt thick and hung around the entrance.

Optimized-Wire tunnel

Despite the surrounding area being well-known for its natural beauty, the Hitchin end of the tunnel has been back-filled to within 7 feet of the tunnel roof and the Bedford end bricked up with gratings for local bats. For these reasons it isn’t recommended to enter, but friends have told me that when it was opened up by activists a few years ago they were able to walk the full 882 yards of the tunnel and it wasn’t dangerous.

So after all of the anticipation, I was a little disappointed that I wasn’t able to get in, but perhaps that’s an adventure for another time for a little scavenger.

If you’re ever in the area, I strongly recommend a visit. Perhaps in the summer time when the flowers are in bloom (according to the official Wildlife Trust website).

April 9, 2015 by Zoe-Lee Skelton

The days are getting longer, the temperatures are in double figures and everyone seems a lot happier now that the sun is shining.

Despite being a whiter shade of corpse, I instantly feel so much better when the sun’s out and I try to make the most of the weather by getting outside. But being pale, I have to make sure I can always find a shady spot so I don’t burn or freckle – safety first n’all guys.

And with summer just around the corner, I’m sure many of you are trying to get in shape for your summer hols.

So once you’ve got your beach bod, what better way to show it off than in this insanely cool Mermaid swimming cossie by Funkita?

Urban Decay Perversion Mascara Review

March 30, 2015 by Zoe-Lee Skelton

I’ve always been a massive fan of Urban Decay. Their stance against animal testing falls in line with my ethics and I’ve forever been in love with their eye shadow colour palette. They’re bright, bold and uncompromising. Something that I’ve always considered my style to be.

Urban Decay Perversion Mascara – Out of the Box Review

Today, I’m not reviewing their eye shadows; I’m reviewing their mascara from the new “Perversion” range, priced at £17.50. It’s a little more expensive than most mascaras out there, so I’m expecting a quality product.

Aside from having a slightly creepy name, the mascara promises to be “BIGGER, BLACKER, BADDER”. I like to think of myself as a ‘baddass’ so I’ll allow it.

Let’s see how the mascara looks on.

Here’s my left eye without any makeup. No nothing.

Optimized-eye before mascara (1)

I kind of look like a blind horse, right?

The mascara wand itself comes out of the tube coated in plenty of mascara. However the wand is shapeless and just straight. A little unusual as many mascara wands are shaped to ensure you pick up every lash when you apply, but not this one. I’m not put off, more so intrigued to see if this will make for even coverage.

Optimized-close up urban decay perversion mascara wand

The mascara itself goes onto my eyelashes easily without clumping. Like many brand new mascaras fresh out of the packaging, I find that I have to do a lot of coats to get my eyelashes to look “blacker and thicker”. It might just be personal preference, but I tend to go overboard with how many coats I put on. One friend called me a cartoon ostrich because of how long my eyelashes are, but I’m not phased – cartoon ostriches have sick eyelashes, right 🙂

Here’s what my eyes look like after a dozen coats on each eye. I also apply two coats to the bottom lashes. That’s just something I’ve always done.

Optimized-wearing mascara

I’m pretty impressed with this new mascara. I used to be a firm advocate of Urban Decay’s Big Fatty Mascara and I would argue that this is better. My eyelashes are less spidery and more natural looking, whilst still being long and thick.

I wouldn’t say my lashes are necessarily “blacker” but the wand managed to achieve an even coverage which can make your eyelashes look a lot darker.

Optimized-eyes shut (2)

Verdict: 9/10

I think the higher price tag is well worth it. And you can feel safe in the knowledge that Bugs Bunny or Grumpy Cat hasn’t been hurt in the process of making it.

So what do you think? Do you think the mascara lived up to it’s promise of being “Bigger, Blacker, Badder”?

I’d love to hear about your favourite Urban Decay products in the comments.
