Super Cute Kawaii Monthly Subscription Box | Review

September 19, 2015 by Zoe-Lee Skelton

Sqweee! This is my second parcel from Kawaii Box; a monthly subscription service that sends you super cute Kawaii treats from Korea and Japan.  It’s like a blind box subscription as you never know what you’re going to get each time.  But this month’s box didn’t disappoint.

Here’s what I got:

main picture of kawaii box

What was inside?

  1. Kawaii neko plush
  2. Tin dinosaur pencil case
  3. Macaron ink pen
  4. Cloud memory letter set
  5. Korean deco tape
  6. Polka dot shoe laces
  7. Popsicle squishy charm
  8. mini animal spray bottle
  9. Alpaca tin case
  10. Puffy paradise stickers
  11. Naru Naru Gumi Nomi DIY candy kit

There are different subscription plans, but I just go with a month on month service which costs $18.90 (that’s just £12.00 in English monies) which I can cancel at any time.

I love what I received, but the only difficulty is finding a use for everything. I’ll definitely use the pencil tin to house my sketching pencils. But as for the shoe laces, I’m not too sure yet – maybe my Doc Martin Style shoes.?kawaii 2 kawaii 3

charm alpaca tape charm pen letter and stickers

I’ll probably use the envelopes for the handwritten notes I send to people who purchase my bow ties from Etsy as packaging can be very important to customers (something that does let the Kawaii subscription service down as it always arrives dented).

However I’m really pleased with the second box so I’ll certainly be getting next month’s.

Do you get any subscription boxes? What do you recommend?

Holiday Memories From Wells-Next-The-Sea

September 13, 2015 by Zoe-Lee Skelton

I had never been to Wells-Next-The-Sea before until my boyfriend introduced me to this little gem on the Norfolk coast. Ever since 2012 we’ve gone back each year  and seen many things change; pubs have changed hands, new shops have opened up and more houses have been built.

Despite how often we go, I haven’t ever tired of the environment. I suppose that’s because it’s somewhere I associate with my boyfriend and we always manage to discover new places and things to do.

And after a stressful few months it was great to get away for a full week, relax and take in some well needed vitamin D. Wells-Next-The-Sea is famed for it’s long, golden beach and it looks beautiful all year round and especially at sunset.

We usually fill our time walking and cycling around Norfolk. There’s still so many walks we haven’t done, including a trip around the Burnham Deepdale circular which takes you in land and then loops back around to the beach and marshes, where everything still seems very traditional – almost stuck in time.

We attempted to walk to Blakeney Point across the beach to see the seals but didn’t quite make it! I still managed to get some good shots though! And then we went into Blakeney village which has a good mix of art shops and pop-up shops as well as picturesque harbour:

I think next year I’m going to set myself a photography project theme and aim to take pictures that portray that idea. There’s only so many pictures of the beach you can take after all!

Holiday Memories

As a fun summer art project, I was contacted by This is Money regarding their Jam J-art project to put together some holiday memories. They sent me a jam jar and some monies to buy some trinkets and souvenirs from my trip. I had to do this for Wells because I really wanted to make something that would encapsulate the beaches and the landscape, so that I could take the seaside back home.

Here’s my holiday memories jar…

What’s inside my Jam J-art:

  • Sand from Wells-Next-The-Sea Beach
  • Clam shells from Ian’s dinner and from Blakeney Beach
  • Lobster, Octopus, crab and minature boat toys from Wells souvenir shop
  • Real crab claws from Blakeney Beach
  • Pheasant feather from our Burnham Deepdale walk

I’ve put together a seaside scene that represents some of my fondest memories. Taking sand from a beach I’ve walked many times as well as actual artifacts from experiences from that trip. The jar is now on constant display in our bedroom as reminds me everyday of my most favourite place in the UK.

Have you taken part in the Jam J-art project? Hoe do you like to remember your holiday?

September Goals

September 4, 2015 by Zoe-Lee Skelton

Hey September (and chilly nights *sad face*). You’ve come around quickly haven’t you?Just when I was starting to get some semblance of a tan. Anyway, if things are going to start getting colder again I’ll be staying indoors a lot more and will hopefully have time to get some things completed.

I’m always really busy and quite forgetful so I create long lists of things I’d like to get done. This summer saw a lot of things ticked off of my bucket list such as going abroad and spending some quality time with some of my favourites. So September’s goals are mainly about pushing forward with a lot of projects that have been hanging around for some time now.

Here are ten things I’d like to achieve by the end of this month.

  1. Upload my new hair bows to my Etsy store
  2. Start regularly doing Free Art Friday
  3. Get accepted onto a craft fair to sell my bow ties
  4. Go out exploring more – do at least a 8k walk somewhere I haven’t been before
  5. Catch up with people I haven’t seen for a while
  6. Go to a gig in London
  7. Finish a painting I’ve been working on for ages! Or at least start on it again
  8. Sell a lot of my clothes that I haven’t worn in the past two years
  9. Look after myself and put my happiness first for once
  10. Go to an exhibition

What are you are your goals for the month?

Interior Design Inspo: Choosing the Right Bedding to Match Your Bedroom

September 4, 2015 by Zoe-Lee Skelton

Choosing the right bedding to match your bedroom color scheme is not as big a challenge as you might think. However, before I even start to re-decorate a room, I have to get the basics right first. I check to see if the room could do with a new carpet or different flooring? What’#s the condition of the walls like? Could they do with a new lick of paint or poly filler? And for bedrooms, I check whether I might need a new mattress too.

If your mattress is seven years old or worse, it’s most probablky be damaging your posture and causing a bad night’s sleep. Take the time to invest in a new mattress now. I recently bought a cheap mattress online at CutPriceMattress it’s a new firm super king size mattress set for a fraction of what I would have paid at the local retail mattress center.

How to choose the the right bedding for you

Pairing linen with furniture

The first thing I look at is bed linens. Styles with straight lines harmonize with other furniture in the bedroom and offer a contemporary and clean look.  If you don’t want to keep your bedding for a few years, chose colors that create a serene mood and are easy to look at. This way the style will never date.

Tips for the minimalist

If you want to keep the style of your bedroom minimalist,  I recommend going with solid colors. Just one solid color works great, especially soft blues and some white. This color combination provides both a cool and soft mood, while giving the bedroom that uncluttered look. Be sure that you cover the box spring with a white sheet that matches perfectly with your fitted sheets. Then all you need to do is tuck the bed covers and the top sheets behind the bed rails to create that clean look.

If you like pattern and bold styles

Once you have your sheets and comforter, mix things up a little with decorative pillows and throws. I love the Boho Moroccan style right now, and even though you might think the colors and patterns might clash with a clean light blue and white set, you would be surprised how amazing it really looks. Tailored designs and colourful accessories can bring together the 21st century and wild color scheme of the bohemian style nicely.

One thing I love doing with my bedroom set is creating a comfy pillowscape when I make the bed. Prop up the large square pillow up against your sleeping pillow, then arrange rows of smaller decorative pillows from big to small.

Now your bedroom matches your bedding and you can feel more comfortable in your room. The key here is incorporating as much as your personality as possibly while keeping things clean and contemporary.

The Room 4 Interior’s Blogger Desk Challenge

August 31, 2015 by Zoe-Lee Skelton

Anyone who has ever lived with me will know that I am both a hoarder and messy. Probably the worst combination. Being a hoarder breeds messiness but my magpie ways are a bit of a hangover from my art student days. I’ve got a little bit tidier as I’ve got older and got into a “grown up” relationship but I know I’m still messy by most people’s standards – especially my boyfriend’s who I’m eternally grateful to for putting up with me.

So when Room 4 Interiors, who sell stylish furniture solutions, got in touch with me and asked if I would like to take part in a Blogger desk challenge,  I thought, perfect. My desk could do with  a makeover and a good tidy as it’s constantly messy. It drives me mad. Plus, I thought I could combine some of the ideas I had from my Bedroom Storage Makeover upcycling competition.

The challenge

Here are the guidelines from Room 4 Interiors Desk Challenge:

“We would like to challenge bloggers and writers to a desk makeover. With just £20 could you find creative, stylish and modern ways to transform their desk? The possibilities are endless and we would like to see what you can do….take a picture of your desk before and after, post it onto your blog telling your readers what you did, how you did it and how much it came up too with a link to Room 4 Interiors as the challenger. Remember to share your before & after pic onto Twitter with hashtag #Room4DeskChallenge”.

Storing my cotton reels neatly is a really big problem I have right now. I use cotton often for my projects and so I decided to upcycle an object into a cotton reel holder.

As the challenge states, I need to share a before and after picture. This is my desk. Before I created the cotton reel holder. I can’t believe I’m sharing this picture, I’m so embarrassed at the state it’s in:

DESK BEFORE

My work space doubles up as many things: a make shift photography studio, hence the lights and the white paper, a place to make my RagnBow bow ties as well a holding space for any other projects I have going on. It’s needs organising!

Here’s how I made my cotton reel holder.

Step One: Source a Plank of Wood

I scavenged an old oak draw at a local junk shop and took the front panel off from the back box. It was heading for the fire so I saved it’s life 🙂

oak draw before

Step Two: Deer Stencil and Spray Paint

The oak panel is real solid piece of wood and I like the grain but I wanted to add some stencil detail to bring it back to life.

Step Three: Add Nails to Hold the Cotton Reels

In between the Deers I plotted out where I wanted the nails to go to hold the cotton reels. nails for cotton reel holder

finished nails

Step four: Draw Handles

I wanted to keep some elements of the draw so I reattached some cute cat draw handles. I will use these to hang ribbons and other pieces of equipment from.

Step five: Add the Cotton Reels and Voila, the Finished Product

Here’s what the upcycled draw looks like finished and in situ:

in situ draw

How much did it cost?

Here’s a breakdown of the costs:

  • Draw front: free
  • Draw handles: £7.99 including postage
  • Deer stencil: £7.59 including postage
  • Nails: £2.90 for 50

Total: £18.48

I’m just under budget but it would have probably been over budget if I had used a new oak draw to upcycle.

What do you think of my make? Have you ever upcycled anything to save space and help declutter?

*Room 4 Interiors gave me £20 as a budget for this project.
