Some Simple Ways To Love Your Living Room

April 4, 2017 by Zoe-Lee Skelton

Most people brainstorm house projects and start with the kitchen, as it’s the most used room in the home. It’s easy to write a plan for a kitchen because it’s always simple to see what a kitchen needs to make it better. There is a room that often is neglected, and that’s the living room, despite the time spent in there.

Designing a living room can be a big job. You’ve flipped through all the magazines, you’ve been staring at paint swatches until you think your eyes are bleeding and there are so many accessory options they now look all the same. Never fear though! You CAN love your living room and we’re going to teach you how with these five amazing tips:

Mix Not Match

Everyone loves to match up their colours, which suits a living room so well. What you should do though, to throw things in the air a little is mix solid colours with patterns. Too much matching can really make a living room look, well, boring! You may not see it at first – we all love different shades of blue – but after a while it doesn’t have much of a personality. Add some patterned throw pillows like these on your block colour sofa and give it some life.

Bring In Nature

Picture your living room in a beautiful, minimalist shade of white. Everything is white toned and you have accenting creams and beige. Classy? Yes. Colourful? Not so much. It may have seemed like a great idea to whip out the Wagner Power Painter Plus and make sure you have an even, modern colour, but without any colour pop you have a fairly boring room. If throws and pillows aren’t your thing, bring a little nature inside and add potted plants around the room and vases of flowers on the windowsills. Breathe life into the room with some beautiful green plants.

Light The Way

Never rely on your overhead lighting fixtures purely for the room. Lamps and uplighters with dimmer switches should be absolutely bought to give your living room a twist. While it’s great to have a great artsy fixture for your ceiling lights, uplighters can really change the mood of the room, especially if you have attached dimmer switches.

Colour Me Happy

While we think it would be a lounge mistake to stick to the same block colours, we do think that you should stick to the same colour palette. It makes it so much easier to plan a room in its entirety as you can concentrate on just one or two complimentary colours instead of being distracted by tons of colour all at once.

Be People Aware

You may not just share your home with yourself. Think about the amount of tread and traffic you get through your carpets and make sure that you choose materials that match. If you’re used to children running around, perhaps don’t go for the thick, white rug!

These five tips should help you liven up your living room and love it in the way it needs to be loved. Make it comfy, cosy and somewhere you can kick back and relax in peace.

What We’re Growing in the Garden This Year

March 12, 2017 by Zoe-Lee Skelton

As the winter chill seems to be behind us, we took the opportunity to plant some seeds on the newly cleared growing patch in the garden. Naturally, Mick had to get involved…

But look, so smooth!

I can’t take the credit for the clearing – Ian did most of the donkey work as he’s a gardening machine. But I helped.

We moved the patch up the garden this year so that what we’re growing would get more sunlight as the previous patch further down the garden was shaded by a ridiculously large shed. We had noticed that some of the crop wasn’t thriving as well as it should and seemed to shrivel quite quickly.

Unfortunately, we had to clear out some plants that we weren’t really in love with anymore, plus they don’t yield stuff we can eat, so they had to go. Sounds harsh but at least what we do grow in their place will be used and should hopefully save a few air miles and car journeys to the store.

But one plant was saved – the bamboo –  which Ian managed to sell on eBay! (I know – this man was born a wheeler dealer) so the bamboo has gone to a new owner. This makes me smile.

Anyway, the new patch has room for three rows of five different vegetable plants; vegetables that we eat a great deal of. We sprinkled the seeds in the mini valleys of the soil and let the rain water them the next day.

I must confess, I’m not an avid gardener. But I wanted to get more involved with the actual planting of the seeds this year as opposed to just the maintenance and picking of the goodies. This part was a lot more rewarding.

We’ve stuck to some familiar veg and a new one:

  • Carrots
  • Salad potatoes
  • Radish (new)
  • Purple spring onions, and’
  • Beetroot

The planting of the seeds is what takes the least amount of time; preparing the patch took half of a Saturday a few weekends ago. But luckily the soil is pretty fertile as plants have flourished there ever since Ian moved in.

So here’s the patch after we planted the seeds and covered everything over.

We used some bamboo canes to mark out each individual row of seeds. No fancy tools or apparatus to see here.

Now we just play the waiting game. I’ll keep you updated over on my Instagram and on the blog.

Have you got any plans for your garden this year? I’d love to see what you’re growing.

When You Love Someone Who Isn’t Overly Romantic | Valentine’s Day

February 11, 2017 by Zoe-Lee Skelton

I’m not writing this to evoke sympathy. Far from it. I’m in a happy relationship. This is merely an entry to talk about the ways I know I’m loved without “doing” Valentine’s Day.

I also want to write this to reassure you that it is totally possible to be in a loving relationship with someone who doesn’t feel the need or want to acknowledge Valentine’s Day with flowers, diamond rings and candle lit dinners.

If on the 14th I don’t receive anything I’m not going to start doubting my relationship. My younger self might have but that’s not me any more. As I’ve got older I’ve learnt that micro gestures are a lot more romantic and meaningful than large declarations. Things like coming home to dinner being made, waking up to a hot cup of tea on the bedside table and the random whatsapp pictures of cats on my boyfriend’s jobs are his way of being romantic and show me that he loves me.

Whilst these might seem like your average day to day encounters between two people, It’s these micro moments that make me smile uncontrollably to myself because I’ve realised now that it’s these little interactions are his way of being romantic.

So I don’t mind that sometimes when Valentine’s Day rolls around that it’s not acknowledged. The old, immature me wouldn’t have stood for that, the old me would have thought my boyfriend clearly doesn’t love me if he hasn’t brought something that lets everyone else know how much he’s in to me.

Don’t get me wrong, Valentine’s Day isn’t always ignored, we’ll sometimes get each other cards, sometimes I’ll get flowers but it’s never a fanfare – and that’s OK.

This year there won’t be presents, but I plan to mark the day using a micro gesture; I’m going to bake for him. Seems trivial, but it’s a little out of the ordinary in our day to day routine. But I won’t be slaving over a hot stove all day because that’s no fun.

I’m going to bake a cake in the shape of a heart. It’s simple and symbolic. I’ve been practising with this heart mould from Lekue*. It’s the first time I’ve ever used a silicone mould for baking and it was actually a lot simpler to get the cake out than a conventional cake tin because I didn’t need to grease the mould. It just cooled and the cake popped right out.

The cake might not look professional and it probably doesn’t scream I LOVE YOU, but it’s something I’ve made rather than brought from a cliche Valentine’s gift aisle.

So how will you be spending Valentine’s Day? Are you a grand gesture kind of person or do you prefer to let it slide by unnoticed?

*I was provided with the mould for the purposes of this post. All thoughts are my own.

Cocktails, Tapas and MK Bloggers

January 4, 2017 by Zoe-Lee Skelton

Phew. I’ve finally had a chance to get back to some blogging since the Christmas rush. I really hope you had a lovely festive break and spent time with those that are important to you.

I spent Christmas Day prepping for the family to come round and ate copious amounts of chocolate. Standard. But it was really great to have my nearest and dearest close to me over the holidays. That’s what it’s all about for me.

In the run up to Christmas, I attended my first ever MK Blogger event at Revolucion de Cuba in Milton Keynes. I met an awesome bunch of people and fellow bloggers and bonded over my first taste of tapas and a few cocktails.

If you have a Revolucion de Cuba near you or if you’re close to Milton Keynes I highly recommend going; they do 2 for the price of 1 happy hour cocktails on Sunday. You can thank me later 🙂

I had a bloom gin cocktail, but really wish I had sampled more of the menu so I’ll need to go back.

Luckily I received some free drinks vouchers so that’s as good an excuse as any to head back.

Along with the vouchers, the MKBloggers girls were lovely enough to organise a goody bag for attendees.

Thank you so much for this guys and for all of the brands providing gifts like a cute hat from Mitchell and Ness, some popcorn from Propercorn, two free Zumba classes from Fitness Milton Keynes, a pale ale from MK Biergarten, a free Flotation Life voucher, money off a pizza from Stu’s Oven, some handmade garlic and mustard ale chutney from Mr and Mrs Fitz Fab Food and my all time favourite hand cream from my favourite cruelty-free company, Lush.

I’m really looking forward to the next event and hope to catch up with you all again soon.

Happy New Year.

American Horror Story Fashion: The Best Dressed From Each Season

October 25, 2016 by Zoe-Lee Skelton

If you’re on Netflix or a fan of the horror genre you will have most certainly heard of American Horror Story. If not, I’m about to tell you why you NEED to watch it.

The horror genre has fallen a little by the wayside in the last few years. It’s almost become a teen squeal fest with very predictable story lines and narrative tactics. Enter American Horror Story which has blown everything else out of the water.

The show is an American horror anthology TV series. Every season is a self-contained mini-series, which has a beginning a middle and an end. Each season follows a set of disparate and deranged characters through a creepy, suspense driven story line. The gore is genuine, you will jump out of your skin and YOU WILL be freaked out.

Every series has a different theme but the eagle eyed among you will spot elements that link them all together. These narrative devices not only make the writing very clever but the story lines also address socioeconomic issues as well as class, race and disability.

Characters have been bought back from the dead, people have been torn limb from limb and Stevie Nicks even made a guest appearance…what more could you want?!

If you need any more convincing to go watch the first episode now, I wanted to share this awesome infographic created by My Voucher Codes which explains the five seasons (not including the current My Roanoke Nightmare) in detail, including which era they’re set in, which real-life events the story line and characters are based on and how the plots are intertwined across all the seasons.

Dissecting the Horror – A guide to American Horror Story

One thing I haven’t yet talked about is how amazing the fashion is. The costume team deserves multiple awards as each series’ attire is ON POINT.

Below I’ve picked out the fashion winners from each season.

Season One: Murder House

The award for best dressed in the first season, Murder House, definitely goes to Violet Harmon. Her slightly grungy, 90s girl next door look is a la mode right now.

Season Two: Asylum

This series’ best dressed has got to be Frances Conroy’s Angel of Death. This angel takes away the suffering inmates of the insane asylum in absolute style. Black garms and red lips forever!

Season Three: Coven

The fashion in coven brings together two of my most favourite styles: 70s boho and goth. I love Misty’s Fleetwood Mac inspired maxi dresses and bohemian layers. And the witches’ all black gothic looks totally slay. I can’t pick a winner so here’s a few pictures of everyone looking awesome.

Season Four: Freak Show

Emma Roberts as a gypsy folk palm reader. This outfit is my absolute favourite. I love the short peplum sleeves on the crochet top and the tight pleated chiffon skirt. Plus the belt is very evocative of Misty’s style from Coven.

Season Five: Hotel

Lady Gaga as The Countess. Basically in every single scene she looks glamorous AF.

Have you been watching American Horror Story? What’s your favourite season? Let me know in the comments.
